Jambone’s latest advert for the Jambox speaker, featuring rappers Snoop Dogg and Marcelo D2, was directed by our very own ‘Chuchie Hill’.

The ad was produced by US production company MRB Productions from a creative idea by San Francisco based advertising agency Pereira & O'Dell.

Shot in both LA and Rio, the advert features the creation of "Obrigado, Brasil" track, made possible through use of the Jambox speaker.

So its all over and the video is now finished.

The team are really pleased with the outcome.

Global Underground will be rereleasing the single 'Paid up in Full' with the full video later this month.

So far its had some great PR with features in the ‘The Drum’ 'Creative Review' ‘Promo News’ and ‘Northern Film and Media’.

Trafik is Coming

It all started two years ago. In 2009 the Institute of Digital Innovation (IDI) asked us to think of an idea for a film, which would showcase their pioneering motion control camera and green screening facilities.

One of our directors, Toma Jablon, came up with an innovative concept for a music video. Jablon's original concept is based on a theory described by renowned Russian scientist Vladimir Vernadsky (1863 - 1945).

In Vernadsky's theory, the noosphere is the third stage in the earth's development, after the geosphere and the biosphere. Vernadsky's noosphere emerges at the point where humankind, through the mastery of nuclear processes, begins to create resources through the transmutation of elements. Buckminster Fuller and his geodesic dome were also source of inspiration.

Without going into too much scientific details, the music video represents this main idea. Nucleus are created by the formation of a Tetrahedron which then brings to life a human form (head only) within it. The Tetrahedrons are then flying through space to reach planet Earth. The formation of a 'nest', the noosphere, made of those Tetrahedrons trail's is taking shape. The noosphere is then wrapped around the Earth.

All this could not be achieved without the latest digital technology. The music video was set to be stylish, contemporary and spiced with an electro-pop retro feel, with a graphic and sometimes distorted feel, giving it an organic edge.

The motion control camera allowed us to capture the exact and precise movement of every such pass. These passes then had to be comped in outer space using CGI. We finished the video but additional funding was needed to complete the extensive CGI. It took us some time to find more funding which Northern Film and Media kindly provided us with. Getting our project funded again meant that Alex Lambert finally got the chance to put his hands on the 3D animation side of the project, while Toma created the 2D and composited/graded/onlined the video.

The music video for Trafik’s ‘Paid Up In Full’ is finally coming up later this week and we are sure it is worth all the wait.

Black Lightning

Another month and another addition to the White Walls project at Unit44.
This time London artist SheOne was welcomed to Hoults Yard to put his mark
on a classic gable end. J6 Films were on hand to capture every moment.

This was a major coup as SheOne represents the emergence of New York graffiti in London back in the 80’s. From the 90’s he has been painting on canvas, exhibiting around the world, collaborating with brands, and pushing the boundaries of his own work. His style is instantly recognisable, his style is very instinctive, in essence he applies paint to wall and lets the piece naturally take its own direction.

This mural named ‘Black Lightning’ took two days in the Newcastle sunshine, and was achieved with the help of Montana 94’, a few Red Bulls and the occasional beer. Think the Shawshank Redemption rooftop scene with a twist. The Wall now sits amongst pieces from Kid Acne, Jon Burgerman,and Roa.

Alex Lambert and J6 Films latest project is Walls, a short film commissioned by Northern Film + Media.Based on the ideas behind social segregation and the subjectivity of morals, Walls spans a period in the life of Joshua, a young man growing up in a deprived inner-city area. It seeks to express how actions some perceive as negative are justified to those who undertake them and the thought process behind this.

Alex Lambert explains:

’When we come across people in life we make an instant assumption. Humans are hardwired to be a visual race. Yet we are also soft wired to be empathetic, despite this , though, we rarely ask why people are who they are and would we make the same decisions if we had lived the same life. What actions do we feel are reprehensible as a society or acceptable as individuals and does this make us any better than the next man. These are the subjects tackled by the film.’’

Walls utilises a vast array of animation techniques, including greenscreening, both 2D and 3D camera tracking and dynamics as well as hand drawn techniques. Though being confident in his animation skills this was Alex’s largest and most intricate project both writing and directing and has found great support in his producer James Baxter who has ensured that Alex had a team around him that could ensure that he could focus entirely on the creative aspects of the project.

Newcastle’s live action and animation production outfit J6 Films has completed a series of 30 extreme slo-mo films of people laughing for an art project commissioned by BBC Radio 3.

Each of the films is a visual portrait of someone from the North East, with the 30 people filmed ranging in age from 2 to 80 years old. They were shown on a series of flatscreen TVs throughout the concourse area The Sage, Gateshead earlier this month as part of an installation called the Free Thinking Festival.

Our latest project for the BBC titled ‘Laughing Portraits’ featured in creative review this month.. Below is an extract for the piece.

BBC Radio 3, the producers of the Free Thinking Festival taking place at The Sage Gateshead from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th November 2010 have announced the creation of an exclusive art installation by a renowned international video artist, commissioned by BBC and NewcastleGateshead Initiative especially for the event, and produced by James Baxter of Newcastle-based J6 Films.

Taking place across all three days of the festival, Chuchie Hill’s art installation ‘Laughing Portraits’ has been designed specifically to mirror the overall theme of this year’s Festival, ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’.

Presented in the form of 30 flat TV screens spread throughout the concourse area of The Sage Gateshead, the installation will examine the portraits of 30 people between the ages of 2 and 80 years of age from across the region, laughing. The images will be both shot in high speed and creating a humorous and entertaining piece for all. To symbolise the natural arc of life, the first 15 screens will be arranged in an ascending row, while the second 15 will be descending.

Chuchie Hill explains:

“When high speed shooting, at approximately 1000 frames per second, we can capture every little movement of the faces muscles and skin not appreciated when normal speed or live.

“If a laugh is captured in high speed and recorded all the way up until the person stops laughing, then played backwards, we shall see the build up of what a person’s face goes through when going to laugh. This is a visual metaphor of the pursuit of happiness, contemplated with a magnifying glass''

The production used their state of the art motion control rig. Toma Jablon directed the piece, along with Graham Smith and Alex Lambert contributing to the CGI. The treatment that Toma produced was technically very challenging and visually stunning. The video will be released in early November.
